mayor’s arts awards lunch
The 1st Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards Lunch was held October 5, 2006 at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Presented by the Toronto Arts Council Foundation, the event brought together a diverse group of the city’s artists, philanthropists, political, civic and corporate leaders to celebrate Toronto arts.
In his welcome speech Mayor David Miller stated, "Toronto's artists are at the heart of what makes our city great. Their talent, drive and inspiration have revitalized our streets, provoked our imaginations, and broadened our perspectives." He also praised the guests in attendance "whose unflagging efforts have helped make sure that more of us are able to see, hear, attend and participate in the city's great works of art." Jian Ghomeshi's witty and moving observations as emcee and a stellar performance by The Gryphon Trio framed the presentation of five highly prized awards to artists and organizations that have made remarkable contributions to the cultural life of Toronto. The first annual Mayor’s Arts Awards Lunch was a true celebration whose time had come.
