The program recognizes a diversity of dance practices, including classical, contemporary, traditional and urban dance forms of all world cultures. The City of Toronto provides the funding for this program through its Community Partnership and Investment Program. If you are one of the members of an applicant collective, you may also apply as an individual for an unrelated project in the same competition. You may apply in one of four categories: Creation: This category supports choreographic creation, including research and development, and commissions. Some form of presentation (e.g., in-studio, with invited peers or public) must be included as part of the process. If you create your work in stages, you may apply for funding for different stages of creation, but remember you can only receive one grant in a calendar year from TAC. The maximum grant in this category is $8,000. Eligible expenses include: fees paid to choreographers, dancers, and creative resources such as an outside eye, mentor, elder, dramaturge, etc. studio costs and production elements that are essential to the choreography. Eligible expenses include: Artists engagement fees, production and administrative fees and costs, including publicity, marketing and outreach. Dance Field Development: This category supports projects that develop and advance the practice of dance in Toronto, and/or contribute to an understanding and appreciation of dance. Projects can include dance technique or choreographic workshops, laboratories, conferences, etc. Professional development projects must benefit a group; individual professional development projects are not eligible. Individuals are not eligible applicants in this category. The applicant must be an organization or collective. The maximum grant in this category is $8,000. Eligible expenses include: Artistic, production and administrative fees and costs, including publicity, marketing and outreach. The project for which the funding is requested must take place in the City of Toronto. Toronto Arts Council does not fund retroactively. Projects that have been completed before the adjudication are not eligible. Projects dependent on TAC funding should take place after notification of grant results; i.e., applications submitted to the February 15 deadline should be for projects taking place after June 1; applications submitted to the August 1 deadline should be for projects taking place after November 1. APPLICATION PROCESS You must complete the Dance Projects application form and submit all requested support material. Where necessary, add separate sheets, but take note of the maximum number of pages allowed in each section. Also note the information required in each section. Use white, 8.5 x 11 (letter) sized paper, single spaced, one side only, with a font size of 11 point or larger. Do not use coloured or fancy paper. All sections must be complete when you submit your application. The application must be signed by the artist or, in the case of an organization or collective, by two members of the organization or collective; if the organization is incorporated, one of the signatures must be that of the President of the Board of Directors. You must submit the original plus 5 (five) copies of your application, including the Application Form and all additional written material in the order that it is requested. Each copy must be secured with a paper clip: do not bind, staple or place in separate envelopes or folders. Only one copy of the audio-visual support material is required. Applications must be received at TAC no later than 5:30 p.m. on the deadline (regardless of the postmark date), and are accepted earlier. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. TAC does not accept applications by email or fax. SUPPORT MATERIAL Audio-visual support material is essential to applications in the Creation and Production/Presentation categories and must be submitted. (Applicants in the Series/Festivals category may submit audio-visual support material if it is relevant.) Applicants should submit from 1 to 3 examples of their work, not exceeding a total of 10 minutes, in VHS videotape or DVD disc format. CD-ROMs are not accepted. Only one copy of each example is required. Choose work that supports or helps to explain your application. Recent work is usually best. You may present a completed work or a work-in-progress; recorded in performance or in a rehearsal studio. The most important thing is that the dancers are clearly visible. Dark, blurred shots or extreme long shots will not represent your work effectively. When voice is integrated into the dance work, make sure that it is clearly audible. Dance films may be used, but not as the only example of your work. Do not submit documentation of student performances or promotional videos. Please cue the videotape to your first selection or indicate the options to be selected on DVD. Use the enclosed form to identify the title, choreographer, and dancers of the work, as well as the venue and date of the recording. Also indicate how this support material is relevant to your project (e.g. is this an example of your choreography or your interpretation, work-in-progress material that you will be working with, an earlier exploration of a theme or style that you are continuing, etc.). Applicants to the Dance Series and Festivals and Dance Field Development categories may submit up to 6 pages of printed support materials, including programs and promotional materials. Six (6) copies are required. Do not send originals. TAC is not responsible for lost or damaged support material. After the adjudication, you will be able to collect your support material from TAC before the date stated in the grant notification letter. Support material not collected by that date will be discarded. ASSESSMENT PROCESS Grants are awarded on a competitive basis by a jury of peers from the dance community. Jurors are selected on the basis of their familiarity with a broad spectrum of dance practices, specialized expertise, and fair-mindedness. Juries are composed to ensure fair representation of gender and cultural diversity, as well as emerging, mid-career and established artists. Jurors are professional dance practitioners, including choreographers, dancers, artistic directors, and presenters. The jury assesses projects in each category according to the following criteria: All categories: Artistic merit; Contribution of the project to the development of the applicant; Ability of the applicant and participants to carry out the project; Financial viability. Production/Presentation, Series/Festivals and Dance Field Development categories only: Contribution of the project to the development of dance in Toronto; Public impact, including the quality and effectiveness of the publicity, marketing, outreach and/or audience development strategies; Financial viability, indicating a range of revenue sources. NOTIFICATION You will be notified of results by letter within four months of the deadline. Results are not released over the telephone. APPEALS Creation: An appeals process is not available to applicants to the Creation category. The principal criterion in this category is artistic merit, which is relative and may vary in a different competition adjudicated by a different jury. If you are unsuccessful, you may apply again to the next deadline. Production/Presentation, Series/Festivals and Dance Field Development: An appeals process may be available to applicants in these categories when a grant is not recommended based on criteria other than artistic merit. Applicants eligible to appeal will be informed in the grant notification letter. CITY OF TORONTO ANTI-RACISM, ACCESS AND EQUITY POLICY The City of Toronto requires that all organizations and individuals adopt a policy of non-discrimination as a condition of receiving a grant or other support from the City. FURTHER INFORMATION For further information on this program, contact Dance Officer Soraya Peerbaye at: Toronto Arts Council 141 Bathurst Street, Suite 101 Toronto, Ontario M5V 2R2 Telephone: 416-392-6802 ext. 221 Email: soraya@torontoartscouncil.org Tips on using Microsoft (MS) Word Forms The first page of the application and several other pages are designed to be filled out as forms on your computer. (The rest of your application will be comprised of attached pages.) You have the option of printing the form pages and completing them manually or duplicating them in another software program. However, if you choose to complete the MS Word form pages on your computer, heres some useful information. The document is locked, so you can enter information only in the text boxes and check boxes provided. The text boxes and check boxes appear shaded when you view the application on a computer screen, but the shading does not appear when you print the document. You can tab from one text box to another, even if the text boxes are several pages apart. Some of the forms included in the application are formatted as tables. In cases where you have to enter information (e.g. names) in a column, press enter on your keyboard between names to create a list. If you are entering information in a row rather than a column, you should use a comma to separate names. As you enter information in a text box, it extends the table, sometimes beyond the page end. This may result in extra pages when you print. Do not submit empty pages with your completed application. Submit only tables on which you have entered information. DO NOT INCLUDE THIS PAGE WHEN YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION. FORMTEXT FORMTEXT SECTION F4 INFORMATION SHEET: ARTS PROJECTS IN PRIORITY NEIGHBOURHOODS Toronto City Council has adopted the Toronto Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy to strengthen priority neighbourhoods through targeted investment. The strategy encompasses the learnings of the Community Safety Plan as well as the directions proposed by the Strong Neighbourhoods Task Force, a joint project of the United Way of Greater Toronto and the City of Toronto with the support of the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario. The City of Toronto has placed increasing emphasis on identifying vulnerable neighbourhoods and targeting resources to improve outcomes for their residents. The strategy for strengthening neighbourhoods takes place within a context in which some areas of the city are at greater risk of negative outcomes than others. Persistently low incomes and a widening income gap between the rich and the poor in many communities threatens the social cohesiveness that has marked the success of the city. Some neighbourhoods have experienced increasing levels of gun violence and criminal gang involvement resulting in city-wide concerns about community safety. An unequal distribution of services and facilities has left some neighbourhoods less well-equipped to deal with the social challenges they face. The following 13 neighbourhoods have been identified as having priority for increased City investment: Scarborough Malvern Galloway/Kingston Road Dorset Park Eglinton East Scarborough Village Westminster Branson Steeles Kennedy Park North York Jane-Finch Victoria Village East York Crescent Town York Black Creek Etobicoke Jamestown Toronto Arts Council supports the Citys efforts to strengthen neighbourhoods through its funding of arts activities taking place in these priority neighbourhoods. Providing the information requested in Section F4 will allow this to be factored into the assessment of your application, but there is no additional targeted funding available for activity in priority neighbourhoods. SECTION F4: ARTS PROJECTS IN PRIORITY NEIGHBOURHOODS Will your project take place in a designated neighbourhood in Toronto?
