AWARDS GRANTS TO 77 WRITERS
Grants totaling $324,500 have been awarded to 77 City of Toronto writers
through the 2005 Grants to Writers program. Two juries assessed 280 applications
in fiction, poetry and literary non-fiction, and recommended 32 grants in
Level One and 26 grants in Level Two. Applications for stage plays and radio
plays are assessed by a separate jury; the jury assessed 73 applications
in playwrighting, and recommended 14 grants in Level One and 5 grants in
Level Two. In all, jurors assessed 353 applications.The program provides assistance to writers for the creation of new works or for works-in-progress in the genres of fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, and stage or radio plays. The program offers two levels of support: $2,000 for new or emerging writers with little or no prior history of professional publication or production, and $7,500 for mid-career and established writers with a history of professional publication or production. The jury members are not told the names of the applicants prior to making their grant recommendations. Grants were awarded to the following writers:
